It's Marvelous Middle Grade Monday again, my second week of this great idea started by Shannon Whitney Messenger. This week, I wanted to suggest a truly wonderful and magical set of books, The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, by Patricia C. Wrede. This set of four books, and you definitely should buy them as a set, is a favorite in my household. All three of my kids, one girl and two boys, have loved the feisty, fearless heroine, Cimerone, who simply refuses to be a proper Princess.
There is something for everybody in these stories, from dragons who mostly want to be left alone to wizards who don't want to leave anybody alone. Woven into the stores is a web of magic which keeps the Enchanted Forest together, and only Cimerone can keep it together. Fortunately, she has help from the dashing (well not-so-much really) Mendenbar, and Kazul, King of the dragons, as well as the reclusive witch, Morwen, and her talkative cats.
These books are magically addictive and often laugh-out-loud funny. Make sure your kids keep them where you can read them too after they've gone to bed. Middle grade boys and girls will both love these adventures, and never think of wizards and dragons and princesses quite the same way again. Patricia Wrede has written many other books, often for slightly older children, but these are absolutely perfect for middle grade and tweens.
Marvelous Middle Grade Monday was started by Shannon Whitney Messenger, so why not head on over to her Ramblings of a Wannabe Scribe to see what she's featuring today. (I do hope she remembered, as she is a bit forgetful)
